Abstract
The detection of microcalcifications is very important for early detection of breast cancer. The smallest visible size of microcalcification is said to be about 0.15 to 0.2 mm in diameter. If the microcalcification content is measured quantitatively, it may provide additional information for diagnosis. Clinical mammography x-ray equipment is not suitable for quantitative imaging as the energy spectrum is composed of characteristic radiation and bremsstrahlung, which causes a beam hardening effect. We have developed a micro-focus fluorescent x-ray source generated by synchrotron radiation for quantitative imaging of microcalcifications. The phantom measurements showed that microcalcifications with 0.1mm in diameter in a 36mm water phantom may be measured quantitatively with an accuracy of about 10%.
