Abstract
The aim of this study was to design a tracheal prosthesis with high durability and biocompatibility. Rabbits and dogs were used as implant hosts. It was found that for long term use, it is necessary to make the inner diameter of the prosthesis the same as that of the natural tracheal as possible, to make tube fibril length longer and/or to wrap the outer surface with film with long fibril length. As tracheal prosthesis is subjected to axial compressive force by the natural tracheal and to radial compressive force by the surrounding host tissue, reinforcement of the prosthesis with fluorinated ethylene propylene rings became necessary. In addition, suturing the implant in place reduced shifting.
