Abstract
Purpose: To study the binocular function of adult strabismus analyzed using 2000 surgical cases. Methods: We studied retrospectively the binocular function of 2432 surgical cases from 2032 adult strabismus patients who underwent surgery at our clinic from August 2003 for 10 years. Binocular functions studied were retinal correspondence, suppression and stereoscopic vision. Results: There were 1470 exotropia and 374 esotropia subjects. Among them horizontal strabismus was found in 79.7 % of exotropia subjects. In exotropia, intermittent exotropia was found maximally in 939 subjects, followed by sensory exotropia and consecutive exotropia. In esotropia, congenital cases numbered 156 followed by paralytic esotropia mainly resulting from divergence palsy. Binocular function revealed 72.8 % normal retinal correspondence including dual retinal correspondence. Only one case showed abnormal retinal correspondence with paradoxical diplopia; the others were a lack of retinal correspondence. Conclusions: We showed that abnormal retinal correspondence was very rare as abnormal binocular function. Therefore, we suggest strabismus surgery in adults should be performed to achieve the disappearance of double vision in addition to cosmetic recovery.
